Mindful Motivation Study

What is the Mindful Motivation Study?

The Mindful Motivation Study is being conducted by  researchers at the University of California, San Francisco. Our goal is to determine whether a new program called Mindful Motivation (which combines mindfulness practices and motivational interviewing techniques) can help adults improve eating behaviors. We are interested in learning if participants are able to easily and effectively participate in this program.

Who can take part?

​

You can take part if you:

  • Are 18 years old or older

  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 25 kg/m2

  • Experience at least 1 binge eating episode a month 

  • Have daily access to a smartphone or computer

 

What will I be asked to do?

​

You will be asked to:

  • Meet the study team at the UCSF Mission Bay campus and provide body composition measures

  • Fill out online surveys 

  • Answer short surveys in the morning and at night (5 minutes a day) for 20 days

  • Meditate for 10 minutes each day using the Headspace app (you will be provided with a free 1 year subscription)

You may also take part in an on-line counseling session and weekly at-home audio exercises.

 

Will I be paid?

​

You will receive:

  • Up to $125 via Amazon e-gift card 

  • A free 1-year subscription to Headspace, a meditation app

Week 1: Intro. Phone call with a trained health counselor

Week 2: Counseling session over zoom 

Week 2:  Check-in with participants who have not meditated 

Week 3: Check in with your therapist 

Week 5: Online questionnaires 

Week 6: Check in with your therapist 

Week 9: Nightly diaries (10 nights)

Week 10: Check in with your therapist AND set of questionnaires 

Week 11: In person visit #2 (up to 1h)

6 month post randomization: last set of questionnaires and (optional) check in with your therapist 

Week 5: Online questionnaires 

Week 6:  Check-in with participants who have not meditated 

Week 9: Nightly diaries (10 nights)

Week 10: Set of questionnaires 

Week 11: In person visit #2 (up to 1h)

6 month post randomization: last set of questionnaires
